A VPN is not enough to secure your computer.  All a VPN does is create an encrypted connection between your computer and a remote network…that’s it.  Two of the biggest breaches in the past decade were facilitated by the presence of an active VPN connection.

The first one was the Target breach.  This was caused by one of their HVAC vendors having malware on their machine that was used to connect to Target’s network.  The malware travelled along that connection into Target’s network and the rest is history.  There’s quite a few things either not done or done incorrectly to enable this.

The second prime example is what cause LastPass to literally loose every single one of the encrypted password vaults of their clients.  This one was caused by the developer having a company laptop on his home network.  That home network had a bad actor already inside and when they detected the laptop, they found a vulnerability in the laptop, compromised it, and then travelled along the VPN into the LastPass backend.

VPN’s are actually a security threat and not a security measure.  If you want a full evaluation of your network security by a company with over 30 years of real world experience, contact us for a no cost initial evaluation.
